The 7th annual Timber Spears Memorial Golf Outing will be held Tuesday, May 13 at the spectacular Lake of Isles golf course. Golfing great Jim Thorpe and baseball legend Luis Tiant will serve as celebrity hosts of the event.

The Timber Spears Memorial Golf Outing is held in memory of a 3-year-old Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation member who died in August 2001.  Timber Spears was born with a primary immune deficiency.  His grandmother, Ms. Phyllis M. Waite, proposed the golf outing to encourage research into the condition.

The fundraising efforts from the past six events helped establish the Timber Spears Endowment Fund at Yale.  The endowment fund is held in perpetuity and supports ongoing research efforts and clinical care for Yale Pediatric Immunology.  As the matriarch and a tribal elder of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Phyllis Waite had a life long commitment to helping children and families reach unlimited possibilities. Sadly, Ms. Waite died in October of 2005 and the golf outing also honors her memory.

Tournament officials are deeply honored to continue Mrs. Waite's legacy and are pleased to announce for this year, tournament proceeds will go to the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut. Timber's family always wanted to help families who had to stay with their children while hospitalized, but could not afford the expense. The fundraising goal is to "adopt-a-room" at the Ronald McDonald House which will display a plaque in Timber's name for the next eight years. The purpose of the adopt-a-room program is to always have designated funds available to ensure that the rooms of the house are always kept in tip-top condition for guest families.

TRIBAL SYMBOLS

Framed against the sky, the lone tree on a knoll represents Mashantucket, the "much-wooded land" where the Pequots hunted and kept alive their identity as an independent people. Displayed on the knoll is the sign of Robin Cassasinnamon, the Pequot’s first leader following the 1637 massacre at Mystic Fort. The fox stands as a reminder that the Pequots are known as "the fox people."
