Schemitzun 2005 to feature culture and excitement

Spectacular dancers. Powerful drums. Bucking bulls. Delicious food. Intricate crafts.  These are just a part of what makes Schemitzun, the annual pow wow of the Mashantucket Pequots, one of the most exciting cultural events in New England. This year, native culture and history will be featured to an even greater extent with the addition of a Pequot Village.

The village, which will be located on the east side of the main tent, will allow spectators to see, hear and even taste the living tradition of life as the Pequot ancestors lived. Story telling, historical wigwam life and traditional food will bring the past to the present.

"We want to bring a new sense of Northeast woodland pride to this year's event," said Marjorie Colebut-Jackson, Tribal Counselor and the chair of the pow wow subcommittee. "Our culture and heritage is of the utmost importance to us, and the Pequot Village will certainly help to remind attendees of where we come from," she added. (More)

Tribe invests proceeds from ferries' sale into development company in St. Croix

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation announced that in connection with the recent sale of its high speed ferries, the Tribe has invested in a new development company based in St. Croix , U.S. Virgin Islands.

The development company, in which the Tribal Nation holds a majority interest, with the minority share locally held by William and Punch Partners, owns a 600-acre beachfront parcel of land in St. Croix. Preliminary plans for the parcel include the development of a high-end, destination Caribbean resort.

The resort plans, which are in an early stage of development, call for the construction of a beachfront hotel, marina and casino, and the possibilities of condominium units and a championship golf course.

"The Tribal Nation is delighted to take the proceeds from the ferries' sale and invest them in an exciting new opportunity to pursue what we do best: the development of a world-class destination resort," said Tribal Council Chairman Michael J. Thomas. "St. Croix is a market that has exciting possibilities, and any development, like our other enterprises, should respect the natural beauty of its surroundings." (More)

TRIBAL SYMBOLS

Framed against the sky, the lone tree on a knoll represents Mashantucket, the "much-wooded land" where the Pequots hunted and kept alive their identity as an independent people. Displayed on the knoll is the sign of Robin Cassasinnamon, the Pequot’s first leader following the 1637 massacre at Mystic Fort. The fox stands as a reminder that the Pequots are known as "the fox people."
